Interview with Andy Wyatt: Organization is the Secret to Business Success

Andy Wyatt, owner of Wyatt Works, has been in the plumbing business for more than 35 years in Cleveland, OH and surrounding areas.

What do you see in our service bodies that you do not see in others?

“It’s more about what I don’t see in your service bodies which are five gallon buckets full of fittings. You open the back of any plumbing truck in the US and I would guess over 90% are going to be a disaster. The reason I know that is because I lived it. I was one of them and fought it for years. We don’t have a place to put everything so where do you put it? You move it around from a can to a box to the front seat. We have 750 some odd parts so think about how hard it is to put them in all in the right place.”

“The best thing about a Hackney body for me is there’s a place for everything and everything can be in its right place. Organization is the secret to business on all levels whether it’s paying your bills or keeping your truck organized.”

Tell me more about how Hackney helps keep your team organized?

Andy Wyatt has overhead some of his venders tell others his trucks are scientifically organized and he likes that.

“We get a lot of compliments from the supply houses and wholesalers. When the truck pulls up to pick up a water heater or other parts I hear from the vendors, “Nobody’s got a truck like Wyatt Works.”

“I had the privilege of knowing George Brazil personally.” Brazil is known for his organization method of his trucks to help his service plumbers become more efficient on calls. Some call him the Godfather of Flat Rate Plumbing.

“George taught me the system. It’s one thing to have the bins but another to put them all together in an organized way.”

“The Hackney truck plays beautifully into offering our customers a more satisfying experience. We can offer to repair your faucet and replace it with a standard or a nicer touchless model.” They customer has options when sufficient supplies are available on the truck and there isn’t a need to go back to the shop.

“Supplies on hand create a lot of value to the customer. Our trucks are a warehouse on wheels. Our plumber techs will have everything on their truck 90-95% of the time to complete the job without leaving the location to go back to the shop.”

Plumbers working out of a pickup truck typically have 50% of what they need which results in the plumber going back to the shop and taking more time to do the job, therefore more cost to the plumbing company.

How many years have you been a Hackney owner?

“We’ve been with Hackney for 12 years; since 2008. I started in a Chevy station wagon in 1979 before going into a Ford van. Once I started working with George Brazil, I bought three 10’ U-Haul’s on a GMC cab and we built a little bins and shelving. Soon they were overloaded”

“I knew there was something better out there and had heard about the Hackney trucks.” Hackney Sales Manager, Holton Woolard, connected Andy with a 2001 used P2000 on a 2007 Chassis. “That truck is still in use today and is like our classic car. It’s a beauty.”

“We are partial to the Hackney and gas Isuzu combo. No matter what you buy, buy the same thing and stick with it.” The setup becomes the master so any technician can go into any truck and it is organized in the same way.

“People will pay for quality service. If the customer sees the interior of the truck it speaks volumes because if the company is providing a clean, organized work vehicle they are probably going to do a good job fixing the pipes too. It also puts the technician in an organized state of mind.”

Since the first Hackney, Wyatt Works has bought many Hackney bodies over the years including the Hackney Jetter bodies. One of their newer locations in Charlotte, NC runs three Hackney units where his son, Seth, is the manager.

“I built a piece of software to organize the bins within the trucks with Service Titans. A lot of people are using it and it’s incredibly powerful. The 3D software shows someone how to build the bins, create and print labels. It shows exactly how and where to put your stocked items. In 1-2 weeks an entire truck can be built. It takes plumbing to the next level.” You can check it out at https://www.titanpricer.com/]
